FOOD SECURITY PROGRAMMES;

Greenhouse Project:

The Green House project kicked off in September 2013 and its main aim was to help meet the needs of some of the women and youth groups involved in the project in the Community.  The Green House will help in boosting food production by improving food security but also be a source of sustainable income generation for the various groups.
The Green Houses once handed over are owned and managed by the respective women and youth groups in the various constituencies.  The Groups are fully involved from the start and are well trained to ensure that full profitability is achieved. We have so far distributed 27 Green Houses across the County. Many have been successful and are regularly monitored.

Maize Seed / Jembe / Fertilizer Support:

Through a personal initiative because of my interest in issues Agriculture, I distribute maize seeds to Affirmative groups.  The above groups have consistently looked up to me to support them every season with good quality seeds and fertilizers to ensure that they have some bumper harvest to first and foremost ensure that they have enough food and also sell and hence improve their livelihoods. The good certified maize seeds ensures that the crops grows well unlike the traditional seeds that most of those who cannot afford quality seed use. Since 2014, I have been getting a limited amount of 500 bags of certified seed that I distributed as best as I could in the entire county. However in 2017, I managed to get 2500 packets of certified seed and distributed accordingly. The Affirmative groups have always been neglected in many development programmes but with support, there is a notable improvement in their livelihoods and there is also relative food security. Though we are slowly but hopefully moving towards mechanized farming, I have overtime supported many women in the County with hoes (jembes) for use in their farms. Women in this country still bear the face of poverty and we need to give them all the support they need since they are the ones who are always readily out in the farms.

I have, through the Ministry of Agriculture managed to set up two fertilizer depots. One in Butula Constituency Marachi East Ward and the other one in Nambale.  We need to ensure our people can easily access certified seeds and fertilizer and at subsidized prices.  Food security is a National and County Government functions but in my own limited way I am also chipping in through the above support.
