About Busia

Busia is a county in the former Western Province of Kenya. It borders Kakamega County to the east, Bungoma County to the north, Lake Victoria and Siaya County to the south and Busia District, Uganda to the west.


Economy

The main economic activity is trade with neighbouring Uganda, with Busia town - the county headquarters and largest town - being a cross-border centre. Away from town, the county economy is heavily reliant on fishing and agriculture, with cassava, millet, sweet potatoes, beans, and maize being the principal cash crops.

People

Busia county is predominantly luhya , tesos and luos . It is however a cosmopolitan county which has a large number of kikuyus, kambas and kenyan somalis.The county has a total population of 743,946 (2009 census).

Busia County has seven constituencies:

Nambale , Teso North ,Matayos ,Teso South ,Butula ,Funyula and Budalangi constituencies.


Nambale Constituency

MP- Bunyasi, Sakwa John

Nambale Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established for the 1988 elections.

Teso North Constituency

MP-Odera, Arthur Papa

Teso North Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established in 2010 after promulgation of the constitution.

Matayos Constituency

MP-Odanga, Geoffrey Makokha

Matayo Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established in 2010 after promulgation of the constitution.

Teso South Constituency

MP-Otuch, Mary Emaase

Teso South Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established in 2010 after promulgation of the constitution.

Butula Constituency

MP- Onyura, Michael Aringo

Butula Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established for the 1997 elections. The constituency has six wards, all represented by elected members at the county assembly for the Busia County Assembly.

Funyula Constituency

MP-Hon Nyongesa,Otuoma Paul

Funyula Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established for the 1997 elections. At independence it was known as Busia Central represented in parliament by the Late James Machio till 1967 upon his death. During the resulting By-elections the seat was won by the Late Habil Kanani who lost the seat to Arthur Ochwada in the General Elections of 1969. Ochwada served one term and lost to Dr. Julia Ojiambo in the General Election of 1974. Dr. Ojiambo served two terms and lost Moody Awori in the snap General Elections of 1983

Budalangi Constituency

Budalangi Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia District. The constituency was established for the 1997 elections.
